Golden Mikes 2008
A rainy but glamourous evening at the Universal Hilton
Being Hal's webmaster, I rarely have a turn to submit articles,
but this years' Golden Mikes are worth sharing with everyone!
Held last weekend at the Universal Hilton, much fun was had
by all.....even those that didn't get to take home a Golden
statuette to place above their fireplace...or their bosses fireplace.
This years' show had a taste of everything, and the diversity
in winners and coverage displayed huge talent among the markets
represented.
Notably, on the the TV side, KMEX took home Golden Mikes for
Video Editing, Videography, Entertainment Reporting, and Writing.
But KTLA can be proud of earning more than any other station
for Reporting, Public Affairs programming, Commentary, Traffic,
Live Coverage and Best News Broadcast 60 minutes or less. Meanwhile,
the radio category was dominated by Pasadena's KPCC in Div.
A and Div. B was clearly won over by Ventura/Santa Barbara's
KCLU.
Ruth
Ashton Taylor and Jaime
Jarrin were both chose to be recognized with Life
Achievement Awards. Ruth is a vet of broacasting for more than
fifty years and had been with CBS since its inception. Christine
Devine presented Ruth with her Golden Mike statue while Ruth
handed Christine her extra large purse. Jaime, the Spanish voice
of the Dodgers was introduced with a touching speech by his
son. Jaime also brought some true blue company with him, baseball
great and retired Dodger Fernando Valenzuela. A star studded
evening, indeed!
The awards ceremony ran smoothly with no real bumps in the road;
so congrats to Lance Orozco, this years RTNA's Second VP and
Golden Mike coordinator "at large." Student scholarships,
memorial nods to Hal Fishman and David Garcia, State of RTNA
by Steve Terrell made the evening fly by as we chowed down on
our Universal dinners. The cheesecake rocked.
Congrats to all the winners, who, for the most part remained
on their best behavior. But for a rainy night, the evening made
for a very glamorous ending to a more than memorable news year.
